Sure as the day is long the media is buzzing, trying to make political hay out of the tragic event in Arizona caused by Jared Loughner. Ironically, people are not truly focusing on Loughner or his ramblings, per se, but rather what hand political discourse played in influencing Loughner. The media attempt to describe him as a crazed right-winger also falls flat when looking at the evidence. Did controversial literature have anything to do with Loughner's mind-set? Probably not, but the cynicism and revolutionary flavor that surrounds it may have. Now, to answer the title question, I would assess that Loughner was the latter; a certified nut job influenced acutely by far-left, anti-American ideology that calls for revolution, and influenced obliquely by far-right ideology that distrusts anything government. He certainly does NOT come across as a Tea Party person by any stretch of the imagination. I come to these conclusions by having read his limited, public ramblings and candid insight from a classmate:
Item one: Tweets from a friend of his from High School, in which he is described as a "Pothead", "Left wing" and quite "liberal"
Item two: Youtube
His YouTube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/classitup10
On it, he has three videos: Hello, Introduction: Jared Loughner, and How to: Mind control
"Hello" is basic ramblings, introducing himself with odd if/then sentences dealing with currency; it's drug induced rubbish.
"Introduction: Jared Loughner" is more of the same, including this tidbit that would make a Tea Party member vomit:
"You don't have to accept the federalist laws. Nonetheless, read the United States of America's Constitution to apprehend (sic) all of the current treasonous laws"
He then goes on about revolutionaries taking over control of the land and laws.
"How to: Mind Control" is more incoherent ramblings that include this gem:
"I am able to control every belief and religion by being the mind controller"
He also favorites another video that is simply another YouTube channel he set up under the name "Starhitshnaz" found at http://www.youtube.com/user/starhitshnaz
This video is called "America: Your Last Memory in a Terrorist Country"
It shows him dressed as a weird grim reaper who burns the American flag. The information for the video is just as incoherent as the rest of his ramblings and is strongly indicative of being written under the influence of drugs. I should note that these videos and words were produced weeks ago, before the constitution was read aloud in congress.
"If there's no flag in the constitution then the flag in the film is unknown.
There's no flag in the constitution.
Therefore, the flag in the film is unknown.
Burn every new and old flag that you see.
Burn your flag!
I bet you can imagine this in your mind with a faster speed.
Watch this protest in reverse!
Ask the local police; "What's your illegal activity on duty?".
If you protest the government then there's a new government from protesting.
There's not a new government from protesting.
Thus, you aren't protesting the government.
There's something important in this video: There's no communication to anyone in this location.
You shouldn't be afraid of the stars.
There's a new bird on my right shoulder. The beak is two feet and lime green. The rarest bird on earth, there's no feathers, but small grey scales all over the body. It's with one large red eye with a light blue iris. The bird feet are the same as a woodpecker. This new bird and there's only one, the gender is not female or male. The wings of this bird are beautiful; 3 feet wide with the shape of a bald eagle that you could die for. If you can see this bird then you will understand. You think this bird is able to chat about a government?
I want you to imagine a comet or meteoroid coming through the atmosphere.
On the other hand, welcome yourself to the desert: Maybe your ability to protest is from the brainwash of the current government structure."
Lastly, he lists his favorites books, stating he "had" favorite books; unsure of what that means, but a lot of them are books typically appear of High School reading lists:
"I had favorite books: Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Wizard Of OZ, Aesop Fables, The Odyssey, Alice Adventures Into Wonderland, Fahrenheit 451, Peter Pan, To Kill A Mockingbird, We The Living, Phantom Toll Booth, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Pulp,Through The Looking Glass, The Communist Manifesto, Siddhartha, The Old Man And The Sea, Gulliver's Travels, Mein Kampf, The Republic, and Meno."
Of course the two most controversial are The Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf. The Communist Manifesto raises eyebrows due to his classmate describing him as a left winger. Should note, however, that Animal Farm is an anti-Stalinism (Communist) book, so this really tells very little, other than he could rattle off book names while stoned.
Item one: Tweets from a friend of his from High School, in which he is described as a "Pothead", "Left wing" and quite "liberal"
- @antderosa it's loughner just checked my year book.
- @lakarune I haven't seen him since '07. Then, he was left wing.
- @noboa more left. I haven't seen him since '07 though. He became very reclusive.
- @antderosa he had a lot of friends until he got alcohol poisoning in '06, & dropped out of school. Mainly loner very philosophical.
- @antderosa As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.
- @antderosa he was a pot head & into rock like Hendrix,The Doors, Anti-Flag. I haven't seen him in person since '07 in a sign language class
- @antderosa He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in '07, asked her a question & he told me she was "stupid & unintelligent"
- @antderosa I can. That is him.
- @antderosa I went to high school, college, & was in a band with the gunman. This tragedy has just turned to horrific.
- Official I went to high school & college, & was in a band w/ the gunman. I can't even fathom this right now.
- Saying Jared Laughner was the gunman. Really hoping that's not the same guy I went to HS with, really good friend. Freaking out right now!!!
- antderosa Arizona law enforcement official: "A person in the crowd shot back at the gunman."
